Regional
Consultation for the UN Study on Violence Against
Children
- Europe
& Central Asia
Violence has no place in children's
lives. The millions of children who are victims
of violence each year are living (or dead) proof
that the world has failed to protect them. Every
day, four children under the age of fourteen
die from physical violence in the European region.
Thousands more are injured, physically, emotionally.
This violence has to stop. We need to act now!
A Regional Consultation on Violence Against
Children in Europe and Central Asia has been
held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 5-7 July 2005.
It contributed to the Study on Violence against
Children, which was requested in 2001 by the
United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The Consultation
was hosted by the Government of Slovenia and
supported by the Council of Europe, UNICEF,
WHO, OHCHR, and the NGO Advisory Panel. It responded
to concerns in the European and Central Asian
region about violence against children and helped
shape the debate about the issue.
This resource package was designed to provide
in-depth information on the issue. You will
find key documents such as background papers
for the Consultation, Government responses to
the UN questionnaire, or resources submitted
by all the partners involved in the study (studies,
reports, tools, field stories, videos...). It
is our responsibility to help prevent violence
against children. It is also yours.
