NGO Advisory Panel for the UN Study on Violence Against Children

CRIN

The NGO Group for the Convention on the Rights of the Child is a coalition of international non-governmental organisations, which work together to facilitate the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It was originally formed in 1983 when members of the NGO Group were actively involved in the drafting of the Convention.

The NGO Group has a Liaison Unit that supports participation of the NGOs, particularly national coalitions, in the reporting process to the Committee on the Rights of the Child as well as other activities to ensure the implementation of the Convention. One important area is the management of Alternative Reports that have been submitted to the Committee on the Rights of the Child (as per Article 45a).

The NGO group has a subgroup on violence against children. The subgroup has created the NGO advisory panel, which was formed to advise on all aspects of the establishment of the Study, provide the independent expert and study secretariat with input on the study's content, process and outcomes, encourage and facilitate broad and effective NGO involvement in the study, and help mobilize effective follow-up to the study. Members were chosen to ensure regional and gender balance, expertise across the range of topics to be covered by the study, and representation of different sectors of NGOs, including advocacy, operational, and professional organizations.

Some information on violence against children can be found in NGO alternative reports to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Presented here are overall tables by "setting" showing what forms of violence are or are not being covered in these reports. Below, in documents presented by "country", relevant extracts from these reports have been selected.

Just because there is no indication of a certain kind of violence in a setting or a country does not mean that it does not exist, it just shows that it is under-reported. This exercise therefore highlights existing data and exsiting gaps in reporting and monitoring.

It is sometimes a challenge to present such information in isolation, or to draw the line between general and violence-related information. Hence, for further reference, please see the full reports. Some countries are not covered because the corresponding alternative reports are not available electronically on the CRIN website yet, or because they do not address violence against children.

The selection, compilation and analysis of this information was prepared by Autumn Barr for the NGO Group for the CRC and the NGO Advisory Panel on the Study on Violence Against Children.
